Evening Solace

The human heart has hidden treasures,
In secret kept, in silence sealed;--
The thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures,
Whose charms were broken if revealed.
And days may pass in gay confusion,

While, lost in Fame's or Wealth's illusion,

The Human Seasons

Four Seasons fill the measure of the year;

House by the side of the Road

Watching the story of Hiumara Kenshin got me thinking a lot about atonement and also forgiveness. I really hate it when I get all introspective but that’s a whole different story. However whenever I do think about atonement or forgiveness I try to remind myself of this wonderful poem by Samuel Walter Foss … I’m not sure if the sentiment is one I’m ready to try to live by but I guess it’s something to aspire towards …

The Reaper

Behold her, single in the field,

The Human Abstract

Something happened earlier today that made me think of this rather frightening poem by William Blake, from his Songs of Innocence and of Experience.

     The Human Abstract

Pity would be no more,
If we did not make somebody Poor:
And Mercy no more could be,
If all were as happy as we:

And mutual fear brings peace:
Till the selfish loves increase.
Then Cruelty knits a snare,
And spreads his baits with care.

He sits down with holy fears,
And waters the ground with tears:
Then Humility takes its root
Underneath his foot.

Soon spreads the dismal shade
Of Mystery over his head;
And the Catterpiller and Fly,
Feed on the Mystery.

Why frightening? Well Blake often uses the term Mystery to describe, in his view, an oppressive system that enslaves people by abstracting or supernaturalising real natural and cultural forces in order to make slaves of them … “And at length they pronounced that Gods had ordered such Things. Thus men forgot that all deities reside in the human breast“.

On an Eclipse of the Moon

Haiku, no?

Now steady friend
Welcome does remainder gleam
Earth's enemy long dead.

I’ve become fascinated by Haiku – a form of Japanese poetry with a clear picture designed to arouse a distinct emotion and suggest a spiritual insight. Haiku has one additional requirement that poems must only contain 17 syllables. This makes the poems very short ( three lines long ) and they can often seem very cryptic or impenetrable.

Poem: Ode to a Grecian Urn

Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness,
    Thou foster-child of silence and slow time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thou express
    A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leaf-fring'd legend haunt about thy shape
    Of deities or mortals, or of both,
